Srimadh Bagawatham - Churning of Milky Ocean Part 1

Churning Of The Milky Ocean:

In this incarnation, the Lord is called “Ajithan”.
Once, Sage Durvasar met a Vidhyadhara girl. She paid her obeisance to the sage and gave him a beautiful flower garland which had been offered to her by Goddess Sri Devi herself.
The sage obtained the garland from her.  The sage came upon a divine procession. Devendra was seated on Airavatam in the middle of the procession.
Sage Durvasar approached Devendran and offered the garland to Devendran. He felt that the ruler of the celestials should have Goddess Sri Devi’s blessings.
Devendran did not value the garland very much. He gave the garland to his mahout who placed it on the head of Airavatam. The garland was of divine origin and bumble bees flocked over the flowers. The elephant was annoyed by the bees. It pulled the garland from its head and threw it on the ground.
The Sage watched all that happened. He felt very angry at Devendran’s behaviour.
‘For not appreciating the value of the garland which had been offered by the Goddess of wealth herself and for humiliating her by letting your elephant trample her blessing, may you lose your wealth!’
As soon as the Sage cursed, the Goddess of Wealth residing in Swarga Lokam vanished with all the wealth. The Devas became worried and went to seek Lord Narayana’s help.
‘The Goddess with the wealth has submerged herself in the ocean of milk,’ said Lord Narayana. ‘You can get your wealth back if you churn the ocean. Use mount Mandara as the churning stick and the serpent Vasuki as the churn rope.’
‘We have become very weak because of the Sage’s curse. We don’t think we have the strength to churn the ocean,’ replied Devendra.
‘Go seek the help of the Asuras. Offer them a share of the amrutham which would appear along with the other wealth but don’t worry, I will make sure that they don’t get to drink the amrutham. Let them know that since you are the Devas, the mighty celestials, you deserve to hold Vasuki’s head. The Asuras will immediately object and argue that they should hold the head of Vasuki since you have approached them for help. Agree to give up on Vasuki’s head .’
The 30 crore Devas sought the help of the Asuras. The Asuras immediately agreed as Amrutham would confer immortality. There were 90 crore Asuras. The hoard of Devas and Asuras tried to transport Mount Mandara but the mountain peak slipped from their hands and crushed many of them to death. Lord Vishnu then asked Garudazhwar to help transport the mountain.
Lord Vishnu was seated on top of Garudazhwar when He asked Garudazhwar to transport the mountain. Without asking Perumal to step down, Garudazhwar along with Perumal on His back transported the mountain easily and dropped it in the middle of the milky ocean.
As soon as the mountain was dropped, it sank into the ocean. Perumal then incarnated as a huge tortoise and lifted the mountain on His back. The Devas and asuras wound the mountain with Vasuki and started to churn. As the mountain was not supported on the top, it started to slip. Perumal supported the mountain from the top holding the peak down preventing it from moving while from the bottom as Lord Kurma He supported the mountain from sinking.
The Devas and Asuras started to churn.
