Srimadh Bagawatham - Churning of Milky Ocean Part 4

Namperumal Mohini Alankaram : radhakrsna2011.wordpress.com

Finally appeared a beautiful youth with dark complexion and eyes like the lotus petals; He was tall and strong. His neck looked like a conch. He wore beautiful ornaments and was dressed in yellow silk. He resembled the Lord Himself for He was Lord Dhanvantri the incarnation of Lord Narayanan. In His hands He held the pot of elixir.
The Asuras dropped the head of Vasuki and in one swift movement grabbed the pot of elixir and ran away. Lord Dhanvantri let them have the pot of elixir.
The Devas once again surrendered to Lord Vishnu for help. The Lord asked Thayar to step down from His chest for a few minutes. He then turned into the most beautiful maiden. He looked so beautiful that Goddess Sri Devi herself thought that if she had known about this incarnation, she could have incarnated as a man from the ocean of milk.
He incarnated as the lady called Mohini. The Lord wore beautiful ornaments and stylish clothes. Mohini walked gracefully towards the Asuras who were fighting with each other about who should have the first drink.
‘Why don’t you let me serve the elixir?’ asked Mohini in a melodious voice.
Like snakes under the control of the music played by the snake-charmer, the Asuras stopped fighting with each other. They looked at the beautiful Mohini and forgot about everything else including the elixir. As if in a trance, they handed over the pot of elixir to Mohini.
‘Let the Devas come too,’ She said. ‘Someone has to eat the skimmed portion while I serve you the concentrate.’
‘Do whatever you wish to do!’ the asuras replied in a chorus. ‘It is our pleassure to have you serve us the elixir!’
The Lord made the Devas sit down in a line opposite to the Asuras. He served the Devas the elixir while He only showed the asuras the empty ladle. The Asuras enchanted by the Lord’s Mohini incarnation never noticed that their cups were empty.
The demons Rahu and Ketu were the only ones who noticed that the Asuras did not receive the elixir. They took the form of Devas and sneaked into the company of the Devas. As the Lord near them, Sun and Moon signalled to the Lord that Rahu and Ketu were amongst them. The Lord took out His Sudarasana Chakram and cut the heads of Rahu and Ketu. But as Rahu had already drunk the elixir, his head became immortal and was recogonized as a planet. As the Sun and the Moon had revealed him to the Lord, he causes solar and lunar eclipse.
Finally when the Asuras realized that the Lord had cheated them, the Devas had finished drinking the elixir. A great battle took place between the Devas and the Asuraas in which the Asuras lost.
