Srimadh Bagawatham - Purpose of our life

What is the purpose of our births? Why are we born? Is the purpose of our life to obtain good education and amass wealth? Are we born to obey our parents? Is our purpose to take care of our elderly parents? Is our purpose to serve the community?
All the above are incidental purpose. Our main purpose is to learn the path by which we can attain the Lord.
Perumal resides in Sri Vaikuntham. He has everything in Sri Vaikuntham and yet He keeps thinking about us because we are not with Him. He could force us to live with Him but He wants us to come to Him off our own accord.
Swami Vedanta Desikan has said that during pralayam we exist with Him but there is no difference between us and achit (non-living matter). Even though we have capacity to think and are knowledgeable, we exist in an inactive form just like any non-living matter during pralayam. Even in this inactive form, our past karmas stick with us. The lord takes pity on our comatose state and in order to elevate us to His abode by ridding us off our karmas, starts the process of creation. He then gives us shastras with the help of which we could follow either the path of karma, Gnana or Bakthi Yoga and eventually reach His abode. He creates the Universe for us to exist in, gives us the instructions to reach Him in the form off shastras and waits for us in His abode. He gives us complete freedom which we misuse when we fail to follow the shastras and spend our energy in materialistic pursuits. Thus we fail Him.
