Yaksha Prashnam Conclusion

Pleased that Yudhishtirar had answered all the questions correctly, the Yakshan promised to revive one of the four Pandavas lying dead on the bank. The Yakshan asked Yudhishtirar to choose one brother.

Yudhishtirar chose Nakulan and asked the Yakshan to revive him.

The Yakshan was surprised that Yudhishtirar had chosen Nakulan. He asked why Yudhishtirar didn’t choose his favourite brother Bhīma who had rescued them from many difficulties or choose Arjuna who is known for his valour and could help Yudhishtirar win back his kingdom? Why did Yudhishtirar ask for his half-brother to be revived?

Yudhishtirar said, ‘I have been taught that compassion and empathy are qualities which everyone should possess. My father had two wives Kunti & Madri. I am Kunti’s older son. Madri needs her son so that he could perform Tarpanam for her as well. Therefore I choose her older son Nakulan to be revived.’

I am really pleased that you give more importance to compassion and treat both your mothers equally. Knowing very well that Bhīma or Arjuna could retrieve your lost kingdom singlehandedly, you still decided to choose Nakulan in order to be fair. Therefore I will revive all four Pandavas.
The Yakshan then promised to give a boon to Yudhishtirar. Yudhishtirar asked Yakshan to help them retrieve the arani stolen from the Brahman by the deer. After the Yakshan gave them the arani, the Yakshan asked Yudhishtirar to ask for one more boon. Yudhishtirar asked the Yakshan to bless them so that no one will be able to recognize them during their agnana vasam. The Yakshan wished Yudhishtirar to ask one more boon. Yudhishtirar asked the Yakshan to bless him so that he will always be able to win over anger, greed and lust, he would always speak truth and be involved in charitable acts.
To this the Yakshan replied that it was impossible to grant this boon as Yudhishtirar already has all these qualities.

Based on, Yaksha Prashnam - A discourse in Tamil by Sri U.Ve. Karunakaran Swamy
(Any errors or inconsistencies in the following series are due to the mistakes I made while taking notes.
Copies of the CDs can be obtained from Sri Karunakaran Swami’s website http://www.nadadoor.org/ . This series is for the benefit of people who do not understand Tamil. Those of you who understand Tamil very well must definitely obtain a copy of Swami’s Upanyasam. You can do so by contacting Nadadoor.org. Swami also renders discourses in English but I am not sure if Yaksha Prashnam discourse is available in English.  The experience of listening to Swami’s upanyasams could never be obtained by reading the following series. I have done my best to take notes with due diligence. I apologize for any errors that I have made while writing this series.
