Srimadh Bagawatham - Prithu Maharaj

Dhruvan’s son Angan inherited the kingdom which was in turn inherited by Angan’s son Vena. As Vena was unscrupulous, the rishis cast a spell to kill him. Since a kingdom without a ruler falls prey to robbers and thieves, the rishis started to churn the body of Vena to produce progeny. A man with dark complexion, short in stature appeared from Vena’s thighs. Vena’s negative karmas took birth as this person. The rishis looked at this man and asked him to sit thus he came to be called as Nishada and his clan as Nishadas. In Sanskrit Nishada means “sit”. Next the rishis churned out Prithu. Prithu didn’t rule per the prescribed procedures either and the Earth decided to hide her wealth from him. The people approached Prithu and asked him to help them as the surrounding lands lacked prosperity.  Prithu found Bhumi Devi in the form of a cow and started to chase her. After a long chase, Bhumi Devi stopped. She asked Prithu why he was chasing her.
‘I want to kill you because you have hidden the wealth from my people!’
‘Where will you place your people after killing me?’ asked Bhumi.
Prithu realized that he needed Bhumi. Prithu requested Bhumi to help them. Bhumi turned into kamadhenu and Prithu milked all the wealth from her. As she was milked by Prithu, she came to be called as Prithvi.
