Srimadh Bagawatham - Puranjaro Vyakyanam

Puranjaro Vyakyanam.

http://bhagavatham.blogspot.ca/2012/11/15.html

The following story was narrated by Sage narada.
Once there were two friends called Puranjaran and Avignatha. They went to find a city to live in since Puranjaran wished to get married.  They soon found a city with nine exits. As they entered the city they were met by a beautiful maiden followed by her 11 servants. A five hooded cobra was above the head of the maiden. Puranjaran married the maiden and Avignatha left after wishing them well. Before leaving, Avignatha warned his friend to live carefully.
Puranjaran became very attached to his wife and never did anything which did not please her. One day he went hunting. The following day his wife expressed anger because she wasn’t with him. He promised never to leave her. They eventually grew old. One day their city was attacked by a yavana king called Chanda Vegan. He had 360 soldiers. 180 soldiers had white complexion and the other 180 were dark. Puranjaran’s commander Prajakaran tried his best to fight with the invading army but without any success. He soon lost to Chanda Vegan.

A woman entered the city looking for someone to marry her. She finally met a man whom she liked and asked him to marry her. The man refused but agreed instead to introduce her to his brother Prajwaran and his army. With the help of Prajwaran and his army, the woman destroyed the city. Puranjaran and his wife died. They took many births and finally one day Puranjaran lay on his death bed when he suddenly remembered about Avignatha. Avignatha heard about Puranjaran’s fate and paid him a visit. Avihnatha took hold of Puranjaran’s hand and took him to his abode in a vimanam.

Esoteric Meaning:

Thiruvaheendrapuram Deivanayaka Perumal

Puranjaran represents atma while Avignatah is Perumal. Avignatha is one of the names in Vishnu Sahasranamam. The name means that no one knows when Perumal will appear or help us since He does everything according to His sankalpam. Atma’s friend is Paramatma and hence the two are described as friends in this narration. Perumal helps the jeevatma find a body to live in. this body is the city with nine exits ( 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 nostrils, 1 mouth, 2 excretory organs). The beautiful maiden is Budhi (intellect). The five headed cobra above her head are the five Prana Vayus. Her 11 servants are the ten sense organs (5 gnanendriyams + 5 karmendriyams) along with their chief mind. The atma is under the influence of Budhi and performs tasks as per the input from Budhi & mind. Thus the atma goes wayward and forgets about his friend Avignatha. Puranjaran’s hunting denotes the dreams dreamt by a jeevatma. Budhi and mind are not involved in the dream state thus they ask the atma to return to reality to stay with them. In dreams the Lord also metes out minor rewards and punishments for our karmas.
The Yavana king Chanda Vegan represents the passing of years. His soldiers are exactly 360 in number with 180 white and 180 black soldiers to represent days and nights. The commander who fights against Chanda Vegan is Pranan which refuses to accept defeat even when the body ages. Finally Pranan is also defeated.
Old age enters the body city in the form of a lady and approached Mrithyu asking him to marry her. Mrithyu will never marry old age but he introduces her to his brother fear and along with an army of mental as well as physical diseases, old age completely destroys the body-city.
As the atma wasted its time in the city and it never sought Avignatha, it takes many many births. Finally at the end of one of its births, it remembers about Avignatha. Thus the jeevatma is blessed by anthima smruthi and surrenders at the feet of Paramatma. The jeevatma is immediately rescued by Paramatma and is taken to the eternal abode of Sri Vaikuntham.
